Along the way

Every Tuesday we want everyone to write in a small course diary. Lectures run before lunch, and after lunch we want you to find a quiet place, maybe put on some music you like, and write down your thoughts from the talk. It is useful for you, and good to have when you put the delivery together.

Each guest talk has two facilitators from the class. The pair is responsible for the conversation after the talk: researching the guest beforehand, with background, projects, interviews and press, collecting questions from the class, leading the Q&A and writing a short summary afterwards. Feel free to give the summary a personal take.

How you do it is up to you. Some start a thread on Slack and collect questions through the week, others take a quick round in class the day before, or prepare their own questions based on the research. The goal is the same either way: getting the most out of the guest, and making sure we have an interesting conversation. Who has which guest is listed on the lectures page.

The main delivery

Over the course you'll develop a case for your own practice. A considered answer to the question: if you were to start something, what would it be? You can decide whether the case should be a practical exercise, ready to launch, or whether you want to take a more speculative route.

The case should cover the topics discussed in the course:

Motivation
What is the motivation for starting this practice? Why can't you just get hired by some other company?
Vision
Why does this practice exist? What is your vision and mission? What do you want to accomplish, if everything goes to plan?
Product or service
What do you offer, what makes it valuable, and why do people choose your practice over others?
Identity and position
How is your practice experienced? How do you communicate your practice and your services or products? What is your distinct position and identity, and what do you say no to?
Channels and clients
Who buys from you, and where do they find you?
Market and competition
In which market does your practice exist, and what other practices are you competing against?
Structure
Solo, partners or collective? Which company form, and why?
Numbers
How are you going to survive the first three years? What are your income and expenses?

You can decide which of these topics you want to go deeper into based on your personal interests, but you should have at least considered each one.

During the elective week, 2nd to 6th of November, we'll help you structure it. On Tuesday 3rd, you'll present a first draft to half of the class, and on Friday you'll present it in a 5 minute pitch for all of us.

The delivery consists of this case presentation for your own practice, delivered as a PDF, and a short reflection note on what you've taken from the course and how your thinking has changed. The course diary is the raw material for the note and does not need to be handed in.
